Highways and Railway applications

Highway and Railway Infra - Structure

The survey and mapping of highway and railway infra-structure presents difficulties for surveying and mapping due to the level of access required in a hazardous environment. Blom group offers a range of remote aerial survey techniques for infra-structure mapping which removes, or significantly reduces the need for access to the highway or railway.

These techniques include helicopter LiDAR, helicopter aerial photography and conventional aerial photography, all providing different levels of accuracy and detail which can be applied to suit requirements.

BLOM Aerofilms operates a number of aerial acquisition systems, each of which is able to acquire information and provide highways and Railway consultants / engineers with suitable data to meet their needs. Each
system is applicable to different situations and activities, but the primary advantage of airborne collection is health and safety, as survey and mapping may be undertaken remotely without the need for access to the infrastructure itself.

There are currently three options:

Fixed-wing aerial photography and 3-dimensional mapping at scales between 1:500 and 1:2,500 (70 – 300mm accuracy). This would also allow ortho-rectified mapping at resolutions between 10 cm and 25 cm GSD.

Helicopter-based laser-scanning (LiDAR) providing 3-dimensional ground models (35mm – 65mm accuracy) and ortho-rectified mapping at resolutions of 5cm GSD.

Helicopter-based aerial photography and 3-dimensional mapping at scales between 1:100 and 1:500 (5mm – 30mm accuracy). This would also allow ortho-rectified mapping at resolutions between 2 cm and 10 cm GSD.
