Digital Mapping

The need for quality, practical topographic mapping is growing throughout the world as the efficient management of assets and resources becomes increasingly important. Integrated GIS enables the user to analyse and evaluate a variety of geographic information, as a basis for decision-making, land management, infrastructure maintenance, environmental study and development. The importance of topographic map accuracy, currency and applicability cannot be understated, if the full potential of the information is be achieved

BLOM Aerofilms provides digital topographic mapping services to a variety of national mapping agencies, government departments and private sector clients. The company has gained an enviable reputation for quality, project management and ability to achieve completion programmes, ensuring that data is available to the client organisation on time.

Engineering applications
BLOM Aerofilms has many years experience in large scale, 3-dimensional mapping for engineering design, either for new build or improvement.
Data is provided in a variety of industry standard formats for interface and direct loading in to civil engineering design software suites.

Engineering data requires high accuracy heights and digital terrain models to facilitate effective design. To improve both safety and accuracy when working on busy highways and railways, BLOM Aerofilms use low-level aerial photography, acquired from altitudes as low as 300 feet (100 metres), providing sub-centimetre level data.

National mapping
Large areas at medium to small scale to meet national mapping requirements are undertaken using both stereo and mono data capture techniques. Over the past 10 years, BLOM Aerofilms has undertaken national mapping projects throughout Asia, Caribbean and Europe for a variety of national programmes and land reform applications.

GIS mapping
Geographic information systems (GIS) require structured digital mapping to support various associated databases and attribute information.

Photogrammetric Data Capture

BLOM Aerofilms use digital photogrammetric workstations which utilise KLT AtlasDSP and SOCET SET / VR-1 for their photogrammetric data capture, supported by digital aerotriangulation.

Information about the position, roll and pitch of the photography, obtained  from the aerotriangulation, is used to orientate the stereo models on the stereo photogrammetric plotters.

The 3-dimensional data is digitised using dedicated KLT Atlas photogrammetric data capture software
BLOM Aerofilms have experience of photogrammetric plotting from all scales of photography from 1:600 through to 1:20,000 (corresponding map scales 1:2000 to 1:10,000), and have produced mapping for projects in numerous different countries around the world, as well as within the UK. The same photogrammetric techniques are also use to revise existing map data.

Photogrammetry is also used to produce highly accurate architectural drawings using smaller format cameras (both film and digital). This technique is particularly useful as it is a “non-contact” process which preserves the fabric of the building. BLOM Aerofilms have experience in this field,  having produced elevation drawings of a number of historic buildings.
