GIS PROJECT FOR ROUTE PLANNING OF MAIL AND PARCEL DISTRIBUTION

A GIS and Internet project was executed for Post Denmark, in Denmark, for the development and implementing of an IT-system for route planning of mail and parcel distribution. The project was executed in cooperation with Cap Gemini and EuroBios, and aimed to provide optimum route plans based on time, costs etc. The system supports means of transportation (bicycles, car, walking and combinations), depot deliveries, and collection of mail and parcels. The system also contributes to the reduction of idle time and overtime. Furthermore, it provides facilitites for creating scenarios. Blom provided the GIS and mapping components, based on ESRI ArcEditor, ArcIMS and the ArcSDE interface to Oracle.

First face of the pilot project was executed in June 2002 and the development and implementation of the project ran from 2002 to 2005.
